Due to persistent problems with IE log-ins through TypeKey, D5GW will begin to use an on-site registration and log-in feature.

Unfortunately, previously used usernames will not be available for the new commenter accounts.

Fortunately, openID registration will soon be available as well, making the issue of usernames irrelevant.

My apologies to everyone who has experienced problems or begins to experience problems during this transition process.

I’ll post updates here. In the mean time, the new registration system appears to be operational.

UPDATE: OpenID and LiveJournal logins are now supported.

Some links to information about using OpenID:

How to turn your blog in to an OpenID” — a pretty good introduction and tutorial

What is OpenID” Wordpress faq on OpenID. WP bloggers already have an OpenID, even if they don’t know it!

My OpenID — a free OpenID server, for establishing online identities.

idproxy.net — another free OpenID server, using Yahoo! accounts for creating an OpenID identity.

You are able to use any home site url or profile page you like as your identity key — provided that you have access to add a little coding between the <head> tags of your site.

LiveJournal users should be able to log in by using their LiveJournal usernames.

Additionally, you can create an account at D5GW and log in through the system instead of using either OpenID or the LiveJournal log-in.

UPDATE 5-8-07: Anyone still unable to comment here may comment on the forums by registering for the forums and posting either a new thread in the Bugs/Help category or continue the discussion already underway.

Additionally, does anyone have better information concerning the use of FOAF files with OpenID authentication? I’ve found only hints here and there which suggest they can be used so that usernames can be associated with OpenID authentications.

Also: Signing out may not always work, although signing in by the three methods already mentioned should work. Let me know. I think I have the sign-out bugs fixed. (Perhaps there were no actual bugs?)

I suppose I should also note that javascript must be enabled for sign-ins; I figured that went without saying, though. Plus, I’m not 100% certain that every sign-in method will leave a cookie allowing quick recognition for later visits; nor, for that matter, if old TypeKey cookies might cause conflicts now that TypeKey is largely disabled. (I say, “largely disabled,” since the OpenID plugin D5GW is using is supposed to be compatible with TypeKey sign-ins, but TK is gone with the link to the on-site login and new on-site authentication plugin. So…)

Testing on-site registration and login.

Test and example of OpenID login.

Finally, a test of logging in through LiveJournal account.

Heh, a test. New username. New “nickname” as This is a test.

There have been some problems with logging in through the new on-site registration and login.

So I’m testing, testing, and will post an update when I know more about what is happening.
