From The Democracy Project:
New technology, Islamic values and relations radically change the implications of Hammes’s strategic model. In some ways, Islamic culture makes fifth generation conflict more like pre-modern warfare.
[…]
In particular, the interactivity of Islamic belief with military action means that a more total approach to war might be necessary than it would be with insurgencies that are built on shorter term loyalties to the personalities of specific leaders. 4GW may be passe.
The author doesn’t link to or define Fifth Generation Warfare.
There is a mention of a “total approach to war”. I think what the author is getting at is really more 4GW. 4GW though is more then just an advanced/evolved guerrilla warfare +information warfare. I guess that should be another post though.

This is a valuable post. proto-5GW should be discovered and referenced — it increases the credibility of online 5GW researchers and makes it even harder for any johnny-come-lately to steal credit.
I’ve added some thoughts inspired by this post/comment in the Blorum: “Johnny-come-lately.”
I don’t think Mitchell was familiar with the 5GW discussions that had been going on prior to that time. He had been reading “The Sling and the Stone” and so there are several posts that came out of that, including the one Purpleslog linked to. This post led to a very rewarding email discussion in which Mitchell introduced me to Saul Alinsky and suggested his ideas as a form of 4GW. Alinsky was an American socialist activist and organizer who wrote “Rules for Radicals” (and other books too) which you guys would probably find interesting. Whereas Mao, Ho etc offer examples of 4GW guerrilla war, Alinsky offers a non-violent, activist 4GW and so is perhaps more relevant for us if we were interested in waging a non-violent 4GW campaign. Mitchell’s specialty is in labor relations and so he approaches 4GW etc from a different direction than those coming at it from military strategy. If I have time today I’ll track down links to the series of posts on this topic at DP. The link below is to one post from that series that quotes from one of my emails. I apologize for the appearance of self-promotion, it is not my intention, it’s just the only post from that series that I have a link to right now. Also the title of the post is a misunderstanding, I was not writing about 5GW, just trying to explore a theme that I’ve written about in comments on each of your blogs (“exploration by articulation”) at some point in the past couple of years (a decentralized, entrepreneurial, strategic citizen approach).

Here are the links to a couple more posts by Mitchell Langbert. The second post applies Alinsky’s ideas to 5GW:
The Need for a Counter-4GW

Developing a Strategy for Fifth Generation Warfare
http://www.democracy-project.com/archives/002852.html
I finished the Alinsky book about a month ago and have been meaning to post on it.
I think it was through prev comments that I find out about it (here or at my blog)
Note: I wasn’t trying to make a critique…as I find 5GW thinking or things labeled 5GW, I may make a long post, or just a quick reference for others to read.
Thanks much for the links.
