Shloky’s “Invisible Hurricane” as 5GW Example?
Cross-posted from PurpleSlog.
On Shlok Vaidya’s Website (worth adding to your favorite RSS feed if it isn’t already), he links to an article on Oil Refinery problems such as:
A third of the country’s 150 refineries have reported disruptions to their operations since the beginning of the year, a record according to analysts.
Then commentator Wolf Pangloss asked:
How do you know all this stuff is just accidental, and thus fixed by simplifying systems, and not the result of someone nefarious doing something nefarious, which would be fixed by complicating and adding redundancy to systems?
My thought is that they didn’t know is was accidental. They hope it accidental, and they assume it is.
From a 5GW point of view, who might the benefactors from this systematic disruption - who might be behind it if this isn’t accidental?
- Global Guerrillas testing out techniques, or slowly ramping up?
- American citizens concerned about the sorry state of domestic security and infrastructure protection trying to get the State to react a certain way?
- Corporate interests and/or American citizens who want reduce Federal dis-incentives for increasing domestic refinery capacity?
Any other ideas?

Shlok believes you have offered an example of the central fault of D5GW, and then proceeds to give an example of the central fault of the Robbian co-optation of the xGW model — as a reason behind his critique of D5GW.
We knew this would happen, didn’t we PurpleSlog, if ever potential conspiracies were used to flesh out how 5GW might play out.
What’s odd is that I recently contemplated the creation of a new bacteria that would feed off oil supplies, even below ground, which might someday be released wherever oil is drilled. A little Muad’Dib action.
I think that Shlok (and Robb) are so often focused on the particular actions, they see the trees and refuse to consider the possibility that these trees may share a common realm (much less a forest) and a common sun. Attempting to see the bigger picture will lead to the creation of many conspiracy theories, as usual, and thus it will lead to the degradation of the search as all conspiracy theories are brushed aside into the loony bin. At least, 5GW fighters will often plan for this to happen. What will be left are the doomsayers who see nothing much at all but a collection of uncollected actors somehow acting in concert, doomsayers who will stop short of trying to isolate the conspiracy — i.e., stop at “chaotic emergence; oh dear!”
I have wondered if Muad’Dib (“He who can destroy a thing controls that thing” - I am paraphrasing) was the inspiration for Global Guerrillas.
I’ll read the Sloky’s post tonight.
