As many know the internet entails a largely (thankfully) uncontrolled and vast plain of information. Within this “lawless” land, ideas flow free. The internet is, arguably, the purest incarnation of America’s First Amendment. The double edged sword is ; it entails a myriad of online platforms that are either sympathetic or instrumental or both in regards to al qaeda and other related rogue (jihadi) networks. Of course any online initiative is bound to an ISP’s terms of agreement.

Recent events have seen my involvement in an initiative to take down these sites through various (not yet truly defined) means. We’ve realized recent success in what I suspect is a collaborative between our own PIST and the JAWA Report as they succeeded in rendering the demise of the “Lee Media Forum.” The instrument of success was a swarming technique in which many fold complained to the host that the site violated the TOA of said host.

By now you’ve followed the “Lee” link and arrived at a “suspended” notice from the host. Follow this link for an idea as to what the forum and it’s members entailed.

I’m a bit reticent to consider this initiative within the theoretical shell of 5GW. Is it a harbinger of 5G, a bellwether for an advent of such? Or is it simply a civil form of 4GW?

Your thoughts/justification for having to violate ISP terms of service or perhaps the law to accomplish your mission?

Your thoughts on what effects you may be having on gov’t-sponsored efforts by adopting this approach?

Any sense of whack-a-mole futility?

Why the presumption that this will entail illegal actions? If you’re imagining a “hacker” approach, I’d say your heading in the wrong direction. I’d say this will entail much more along the lines of finding and reporting (to both ISP and LE.)

As for what effect this might have on gov’t-sponsored operations, you’d be in a much better position to offer your thoughts on this than I. Please do.

Futility? I don’t think anyone who’s joined harbors any visions of laying al qaeda to waste if that’s what you’re getting at.

I’m always curious about approach given the use of language like “special ops” and other adoption of mil and intel terms to other endeavors. The mistakes/confusion that can be caused can be troublesome.

Laying waste? No, but given the ease/cost/speed of setting up new sites, the level of effort to do anything beyond kicking them off of US-based systems seems arduous absent some form of automation. Then again, most things worth doing, etc., etc.

Think the spam filter got you. Please resend.

We wll know Irregulars are annoying the enemy when the cyber-jihadis attempt to lawfare the people’s information support teams out of business through allegations of illegal activity.

WHAT gov’t-sponsored efforts?
There would be no cyber militias if .gov had strategically communicated a perception of competence. They failed to do that, and they failed to mobilize many Americans desperate to DO something they see as worthwhile. People are mobilizing themselves as non-state actors/NGO’s to do for their favorite Westphalian nation-state what it appears to be incapable of doing for itself; fight hostile non-state actor/NGO’s in cyber space.

Whack-a-mole is a problem for Regulars dependent upon Congress for funding. Irregulars do it on their own dime on their own time. Every mole that gets whacked inconveniences some adolescent onanistic jihadi wannabe who might begin to question the competence of people who can’t keep a site up.Whack enough moles and a certain percentage of lurkers will give it up. Irregular measures of effectiveness don’t have to withstand Congressional scrutiny, so even a small percentage of discouraged wannabes is worth doing.

It is bad for citizen morale to leave everything to Regulars, especially when the citizens become uncomfortably aware of the Regular’s wardrobe deficiencies.

I would say it is “civil form of 4GW”.

I would also say that the people or peoples setting the stage for and nudging this type of “civil form of 4GW” may be practicing 5GW by manipulating into action the 4WGers for an end goal desired by the 5GWers.
