My voice is disguised by a heavy cold, I talk way to fast (as I do in real life when excited), and I didn’t sleep much the night before, but none the less, an interview I gave on 5GW for Brett Winterble’s Covert Radio has been published. The time runs 18m40s.

The interview covered the following:

- How we got to 5GW thinking

- My current 5GW definition

- Mentioned most of the USA’s opponents are 4GWers and briefly discussed Hezbollah vs Israel, and that domestic USA terror groups are 4GWish also.

- I covered the anti-Soviet 5GW (the 1947ers) documented by TDAXP and suggested establishing a similar 5GW (as originally suggested by TDAXP) to shrink the gap (if Thomas Barnett’s Grand Strategy for the US is to be adopted) to put gap-shrinking on automatic pilot so future USA leaders will have the right tool they need then to make short term decision which will tend to be gap-shrinking.

-I suggested that Sun-Tzu thinking was in harmony with 5GW.

- When asked about a possible 6GW I didn’t think it was likely…I wasn’t sure were the XGW could go for there to be a 6GW.

Some other notes:

- If I was writing out my responses I would have worded things differently

- I am proud I did not swear or use an evil laugh

- I don’t why I kept re-enforcing “institutions” over and over again

- The interview went so quick, I had lots of material left over

- Hope TDAXP is okay with me promoting his stuff

- The host, Brett Winterble, was gracious and easy to work with.

- I had lots of fun

- I hope I get invited again!

I would appreciate feedback on the content and the style.

Congrats, this is very cool!

I will download and listen to the podcast!

A very cool interview, glad that your interlocutor seemed very positive about what you were saying.

I would appreciate feedback on the content and the style.

Hah well o.k.

I agree that you spoke very quickly, and sometimes I had difficulty understanding you through the phone interface on top of that.

I probably would have put more emphasis on Lind, Boyd, and Barnett: enunciating very clearly (and more slowly!) their full names and giving a very short introduction to the ideas they use which we use at Dreaming 5GW. I don’t know the listening audience, so I can’t know how familiar most are with those theorists, but wonder if the quick glosses you gave only threw out unfamiliar data that would somewhat de-contextualize everything you were saying.

Boyd maybe could be glossed or skipped in such a short interview — introduction to the OODA is a 1hr lesson plan at least — but Lind’s framework probably needed a bit more contextualization. For instance, what are the relations of the generations to each other? So: what is the foundation upon which we build 5GW theory, and how/why have we moved beyond Lind’s theory?

Given your Cold War example and the way you finished the interview, I think that explicating the “Gap” theories of Thomas Barnett would have been very helpful for contextualizing what you were saying.

For future interviews (let there be many!) maybe use the word “systems” more often than “institutions.”

But a generally good interview, and cordial response from the host, it was.

CGW:

Yeah, there is a muffling on the phone connection. The interviewer was using Skype, so I guess I could get that capability too. I was using an anonymous pre-paid cell phone.

I have been thinking we should put on some podcasts of our own to cover topics of our choosing and out pace using free an available equipment.

Congrats Purpleslog!

That was very cool. I really do think you kind of surprised and genuinely interested the host during your conversation. I think the clincher for him was when he brought up a couple of organizations that he thought might be 5GW. Usually somebody with a ‘pet theory’ will hang their label on almost anything that moves even if they have to stretch their theory to argue it, but you told him that those were still 4GW organizations (which they, of course, are).

In all, I think you did a really great job. Talk slower, yes. Get a better phone/VOIP connection, maybe. Keep doing these kinds of interviews, certainly.

Can: Thanks!

Ar: Thanks for the feedback!
